Links for Greener School Yards
Our goal is to engage learning communities and families; to share knowledge, skills, and create an inclusive community around shared gardens. This project promotes sustainability in schools by developing and maintaining green spaces such as food and vegetable gardens. This program is designed to educate and foster an appreciation among children of how food is grown, how to eat healthy and how to care for our natural environment. So far there are two established school gardens under this project, one at St. Christopher’s Catholic Elementary School and the very recently opened gardens at Lincoln Centennial Public School.
It entails getting the students, staff and parents involved in the regular maintenance and care of these green spaces, educating them about planting, composting and environmental preservation through activities. During the school year, teachers and students use the gardens to deliver hands-on lessons, while having fun and growing food. In the summer, families are welcomed to work with LGL staff to care for, harvest, and take home the bounty! It’s an opportunity to develop leaders within their own school neighborhoods, and foster that inborn sense of wonder in children as they watch seeds transform into food.
