Earth Day Celebration

earth day celebration 2015

Links for Greener Learning (LGL)hosted the 1st Let’s Recycle Niagara Event at the Farmers Market in St. Catharines. This event is important to LGL as it gives information to the public about eco-conscious ways of dealing with day to day waste.

The event was not only to provide information on recycling, but also how to “up-cycle”, resulting in the diversion of waste in our landfills, while generating income and creating jobs. This event supports Niagara Region Waste Management’s goal of achieving a 60% diversion by 2020.

The theme for the event was “Recycling and Composting,” and how small businesses are collecting reusable/recyclable materials thereby reducing the amount of materials heading to landfills in Niagara. Communities can become more environmentally sustainable through living green initiatives which are exercised through involvement, education and engagement. This event was successful thanks to our wonderful sponsors, Niagara organizations, vendors, volunteers and the community.

Workshops with the themes of recycling and composting were hosted before the event. With the support of Niagara Region Waste Management, the workshops were hosted at St. Johns School and Father Fogarty at the adult learning centers and the target audience was newcomers to Canada. Information was provided in English, Spanish and Mandarin to support the ESL students to understand the recycling practices in Niagara Region.
